Welcome

Welcome to Upside Down Bananas, which is intended to be an outlet for a variety of interests and thoughts, both personal and professional. This blog is about insight and observation — it’s not meant to assert expert opinion. To be honest, I think authentic blogging is not so much about disseminating expertise as it is about asking questions and engaging others in your observations.

I became an online nerd when I was about 12 and was an online zine editor by the time I was 13. Hundreds of kids were involved in self-made online communities and were developing content of interest to each other. No one considered themselves an expert (or was even intentional about becoming one)… but those are the sort of people who went on to work at places like Google, and I think those are the sort of people who have ignited social media as we (are starting to) know it. Much like the early days of zine communities, I think one of the value of blogs and social media is that they create accessible, flat communities — flat enough to be intuitive, simple and therefore more capable of reflecting their creators (us).

It’s much like peeling bananas upside down, I think. My grandfather taught me this trick when I was 20. I was impressed by such a funny, fresh way of looking at bananas. I recognize that I’m just too easily impressed… but I thought the idea of peeling bananas upside down is a nice philosophy in its own right, so I decided to name this blog after it.
